A magical and career-defining spell from veteran spinner Keshav Maharaj left Australia in a complete spin, as South Africa romped to a 98-run victory in their opening ODI clash in Cairns. Maharaj’s 5-33 was the catalyst for a spectacular batting collapse that saw the hosts bundled out for just 198.
Set a challenging target of 297, Australia’s chase began solidly, reaching 60 without loss. But the game was flipped on its head when Maharaj began to weave his magic. The left-armer was unplayable, at one stage boasting figures of 5-9, as he scythed through the Australian lineup, triggering a loss of six wickets for 29 runs.
The Proteas had earlier set a formidable total thanks to a disciplined batting effort. Aiden Markram led the charge with a fluent 82, well-supported by Temba Bavuma who crafted a patient 65. Even a four-wicket haul from Australia’s part-time spinner Travis Head couldn’t stop the visitors from posting a commanding 8-296.
Australian skipper Mitch Marsh was the only shining light in a dismal batting card, scoring a defiant 88. His resistance proved futile, however, as the rest of the order failed to provide any support. The comprehensive win puts South Africa firmly in control of the three-match series.
