Science fiction fans, rejoice! This week is a banner week for the genre, with three of the five major streaming premieres falling squarely into the world of sci-fi. From killer androids to futuristic romance, the new film releases explore the exciting and often dangerous possibilities of technology and the future.
The most action-packed offering is M3GAN 2.0, the sequel to the viral horror hit, now streaming on Peacock. The story takes a thrilling turn as Gemma (Allison Williams) must reactivate M3GAN to combat AMELIA, a highly advanced military android designed for infiltration and assassination. It’s a high-tech battle for survival where M3GAN’s deadly skills are put to a new test.
On a completely different end of the sci-fi spectrum is All of You, premiering on Apple TV+ on September 26. This romance drama, starring Imogen Poots and Jenna Coleman, uses a science fiction backdrop to explore the deeply human story of two best friends in love. Directed by William Bridges, the film is expected to be an emotionally resonant and visually stunning piece of storytelling.
Even the week’s biggest action film, Ballerina (Starz, September 25), has a sci-fi feel with its hyper-stylized world of assassins governed by futuristic technology and unbreakable rules. This John Wick spin-off stars Ana de Armas in a relentless quest for revenge, blending classic action tropes with a sleek, modern aesthetic.
While not strictly sci-fi, Karate Kid: Legends (Netflix, September 27) and The Surfer (Hulu, September 25) provide excellent counter-programming. The former unites two martial arts legends for a new generation, while the latter offers a tense, psychological thriller with a powerhouse performance from Nicolas Cage, ensuring a well-rounded week for all movie lovers.
