OpenAI is making a platform-specific change to ChatGPT. Voice interaction through the macOS desktop application will cease on January 15, 2026. The company described this decision in update notes as part of focusing efforts on more unified voice experiences across its ecosystem.
Voice functionality isn’t disappearing from the ChatGPT ecosystem entirely. Mac users can continue using voice through the web interface, mobile apps on iOS and Android, or by switching to Windows. The removal specifically and exclusively affects the Mac desktop application.
OpenAI’s announcement lacks detailed technical justification. However, the language about unified experiences suggests the Mac app’s current voice implementation may not align with future strategic directions. Voice is becoming increasingly central to AI applications, particularly as companies develop hardware products and explore system-level integrations.
The practical impact falls on users with established voice-based workflows. Those using voice for accessibility accommodations, people who multitask with hands-free AI conversation, or users preferring verbal over written communication will need new solutions. Alternative platforms exist but may not offer identical experiences.
Most technology analysts view this as a temporary situation. OpenAI’s substantial investment in voice technology across other products makes permanently abandoning Mac users unlikely. The discontinuation probably facilitates larger infrastructure improvements that will eventually deliver enhanced voice capabilities to Mac.
