Putin Threatens to Widen War if West Deploys Troops in Ukraine

by admin477351

Vladimir Putin has threatened to widen the war in Ukraine, warning that any Western troops deployed there would be attacked by Russian forces. The declaration that such troops would be “legitimate targets” is a direct and hostile response to ongoing discussions in Europe about providing Kyiv with long-term security guarantees.

The European plan, pushed by French President Emmanuel Macron, involves a 26-nation coalition that would establish a military presence in Ukraine after the conflict. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has embraced the concept, suggesting it would involve “thousands” of personnel. Putin’s threat is a clear attempt to intimidate these nations and force them to abandon the idea.

The Russian leader is leveraging the palpable fear of escalation that exists in many Western capitals. Germany, Spain, and Italy, among others, have already refused to commit troops, demonstrating a lack of consensus that benefits Moscow. This has led to the proposal being downgraded from an active peacekeeping mission to a more symbolic “reassurance force.”

Meanwhile, the path to a diplomatic resolution is completely blocked. Peace initiatives have failed to produce any results. Putin has publicly cast doubt on the possibility of an agreement, while Zelenskyy has questioned whether Russia truly wants to end the war, leaving the two nations locked in a military and rhetorical battle with no clear off-ramp.
