South Korea Investigates Fuel Shipments to Russia for Possible Legal Violations

by admin477351

South Korea is considering legal action following reports of substantial fuel shipments from its ports to Russia, potentially breaching domestic laws. An investigation is underway after analysis of port records and ship-tracking data revealed that over 176,000 tonnes of refined petroleum products, primarily diesel, were transported to Russia during July and August. These shipments were loaded onto seven tankers at various South Korean ports, making a total of 14 voyages to Russia’s Far East.

Among the vessels involved, three are under sanctions from the United Kingdom and the European Union. These ships reportedly declared destinations like Japan or Singapore before heading to the Russian port city of Vladivostok. South Korean authorities are scrutinizing the tankers’ routes, declared destinations, and any changes to these plans to determine if false declarations or legal violations occurred.

South Korea’s government has stated that the petroleum products in question were not restricted under its export controls on Russia, which primarily focus on industrial machinery, electronics, and vehicles. Customs records, according to officials, do not indicate any direct exports of diesel, aviation fuel, or motor petrol to Russia. Despite this, the shipments have sparked concern in Ukraine, where officials argue they could weaken international sanctions against Russia.

South Korea has dismissed Ukrainian criticism as inaccurate and inappropriate, though Ukraine has formally raised the issue through diplomatic channels and requested clarification from Seoul. Amidst the growing tension between the two countries, South Korea has recalled its ambassador to Ukraine, expressing hope that the issues can be resolved through continued dialogue.
