Trump Threatens Foreign Firms with Up to 300% Tariffs Without U.S. Plants

In a move aimed at bolstering domestic manufacturing, U.S. President Donald Trump has issued a stern warning to foreign companies: establish manufacturing plants in the United States or face tariffs ranging from 150% to 300%. Trump emphasized that overseas companies would have approximately 18 months to comply before the increased tariffs would be enforced. This policy is part of a broader effort to attract foreign investment and expand the manufacturing sector within the country.

The backdrop to this warning is a significant $350 billion investment agreement between the United States and South Korea. As part of this deal, South Korea has pledged to invest $350 billion in the U.S., which has resulted in a reduction of tariffs on Korean goods from 25% to 15%. The investment package is comprehensive, allocating $150 billion for shipbuilding cooperation and $200 billion for strategic investments.

Despite this progress, there are unresolved issues between Seoul and Washington, particularly concerning South Korea’s involvement in the proposed Alaska LNG project. South Korean officials have indicated that the project requires further assessment regarding its commercial viability before any definitive investment decisions are made. The project, which is projected to cost between $44.5 billion and $54.5 billion, would include the development of a major pipeline, gas treatment facilities, and an LNG terminal.

Within the framework of this investment package, the first confirmed project is a gas-fired power plant in Texas. Additionally, discussions have taken place regarding potential collaboration on nuclear reactors, though these plans remain under review.
