Vietnam is stepping into a pivotal role in enhancing the collaboration between the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and Russia, as demonstrated during the recent ASEAN–Russia Commemorative Summit, which celebrated 35 years of dialogue relations. Foreign Minister Lê Hoài Trung emphasized the significant contributions made by Vietnam to ensure the summit’s success, focusing on the promotion of ASEAN’s central role and the strengthening of the bloc’s strategic partnership with Russia.
Under the leadership of Prime Minister Lê Minh Hưng, the Vietnamese delegation underscored the importance of dialogue, cooperation, and peaceful dispute resolution, while advocating for respect for international law. They proposed expanding collaborative efforts in crucial sectors such as energy, trade, transport connectivity, agriculture, and digital transformation. The summit resulted in the adoption of new frameworks designed to bolster ASEAN–Russia cooperation through 2030, with energy identified as a key component of this partnership.
Vietnam also announced plans to host the ASEAN–Russia Young Diplomats Summit in 2027, signaling its ongoing commitment to nurturing future regional cooperation. This announcement aligns with Vietnam’s broader strategy to play a more influential role in fostering diplomatic ties within the region.
On the sidelines of the summit, Prime Minister Hưng engaged in discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The talks reaffirmed both nations’ dedication to deepening the Vietnam–Russia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. Key areas of focus included expanding cooperation in energy, trade, infrastructure, science and technology, education, and transport.
Vietnam expressed optimism that the outcomes of the summit would serve to reinforce ASEAN–Russia relations, contribute to regional stability, and open up new avenues for economic growth and cooperation across the Eurasian continent. The strengthened ties are anticipated to create a more robust framework for tackling regional challenges and leveraging economic opportunities.
