Monsoon Health Symptoms Impacting Healthcare Demand and Economic Activity

During the monsoon season, it’s not uncommon to experience sneezing, a runny nose, and nasal congestion, which can make it challenging to differentiate between a viral cold and allergic rhinitis. Health specialists emphasize that recognizing the distinctions is crucial for obtaining timely and appropriate treatment.

A viral cold often unfolds gradually. It typically begins with a sore or scratchy throat and progresses to a blocked nose, cough, and congestion over the course of a few days. In contrast, allergic rhinitis tends to appear suddenly, often after exposure to triggers like dust, mold, or damp indoor conditions.

Fever serves as a noteworthy differentiator between the two. While viral colds may lead to mild fever, body aches, and fatigue as the immune system combats the infection, allergic rhinitis generally does not cause fever unless an additional infection is present. Itching is more commonly associated with allergies, with symptoms such as itchy eyes, nose, or throat, whereas viral colds typically involve congestion and a runny nose without significant itching.

The duration of symptoms can offer further insight. Most viral colds tend to resolve within one to two weeks. If symptoms persist beyond this period, recur frequently, or appear at the same time each monsoon, allergies may be the root cause. Additionally, the nature of nasal discharge can differ: a cold may lead to thicker mucus that turns yellow or green as it progresses, whereas allergy-related discharge generally remains thin and clear.

Experts recommend ample rest, proper hydration, and supportive care for recovery from a cold. For those with allergic rhinitis, avoiding known triggers, using saline nasal rinses, and taking prescribed allergy medications may be beneficial. Individuals experiencing persistent symptoms, repeated seasonal episodes, wheezing, breathing difficulties, or no improvement after a few days should seek medical evaluation for an accurate diagnosis.
