South Korea is solidifying its status in the global economic arena, having achieved the world’s second-largest current account surplus among major economies in the second quarter of the year. According to President Lee Jae Myung, the nation recorded a surplus of US$116.63 billion from April to June, trailing only behind China, which posted a surplus of US$193.72 billion, as per International Monetary Fund data available through the Bank of Korea.

President Lee emphasized that South Korea is moving beyond its historical role of following advanced economies and is now actively shaping the global economic landscape. This development is underscored by the fact that South Korea’s surplus surpassed the combined totals of Germany and Japan, two traditionally strong economies.

One of the key drivers of this economic success is the international performance of South Korean companies, particularly in the semiconductor sector. This industry is pivotal for the development of artificial intelligence technologies, which are increasingly integral to various global markets.

Lee called for continued efforts to build on these achievements by enhancing the country’s industrial competitiveness and raising its potential economic growth rate. He highlights the importance of leveraging South Korea’s current economic momentum to further contribute to global economic trends.
