As China and Russia celebrate a quarter-century since the establishment of their Treaty of Good-Neighborliness and Friendly Cooperation, both nations have pledged to enhance their bilateral relationship and fortify their long-term strategic collaboration. This treaty, initially signed on July 16, 2001, and subsequently renewed, serves as the cornerstone of their comprehensive strategic partnership. Chinese authorities emphasized the intention to deepen mutually advantageous cooperation in various sectors, while also fostering global stability and confidence in development.

This anniversary is part of a broader timeline, as both countries gear up to commemorate 30 years of their strategic partnership in 2026. For 16 years running, China has held the position of Russia’s top trading partner. Bilateral trade figures underscore this enduring relationship, with trade volumes reaching about $228 billion in 2025. Furthermore, the first half of 2026 witnessed a notable increase in commerce compared to the same timeframe the previous year.

Experts and officials highlight the treaty’s role in bolstering political trust and economic cooperation between the two nations. They also interpret the partnership as being grounded in principles that eschew alignment with military blocs, avoid confrontation, and ensure mutual benefit. This approach is seen as contributing to a more balanced international order.

The Treaty of Good-Neighborliness and Friendly Cooperation not only underscores the enduring alliance between China and Russia but also reflects their shared commitment to a partnership that transcends mere economic ties. By focusing on non-alignment and non-confrontation, the two countries aim to craft a relationship that is resilient against global uncertainties, thereby reinforcing their position on the world stage.
