Peter Cullen, the iconic Canadian voice actor renowned for bringing to life characters like Optimus Prime from the Transformers series and Eeyore from the Winnie the Pooh franchise, has passed away at the age of 85. His family confirmed that Cullen died on Wednesday at his Los Angeles home, with loved ones by his side.
Originally from Montreal, Cullen’s career began in Canadian television and radio before he made his mark as a legendary voice actor in the entertainment industry. He first lent his voice to Optimus Prime in the 1984 Transformers animated series, a role that would become a defining part of his career. Cullen reprised the role in seven blockbuster films from 2007 to 2023, as well as in various spin-offs, cementing his status as the voice of the beloved Autobot leader.
Beyond Transformers, Cullen was also the voice behind Eeyore, the endearing yet gloomy donkey from Winnie the Pooh. His portrayal of Eeyore spanned across The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh and several other television series, films, and video games. Cullen’s ability to bring distinct personalities to his roles extended to voicing KARR, the villainous counterpart to KITT in Knight Rider, as well as providing the eerie clicking sounds for the creature in the 1987 film Predator and voicing King Kong in the 1976 remake.
