India is progressing with its plan to procure an additional five S-400 Triumf air defence systems from Russia, with Moscow having recently provided a cost proposal to initiate negotiations with New Delhi. The final decision on this acquisition will be made by the Cabinet Committee on Security once the price negotiations are completed and the Finance Ministry gives its approval. India’s initial agreement for five S-400 systems, which was signed in 2018 for $5.43 billion, is on track to be fulfilled with the last system expected to be delivered by November 2026.
The acquisition of these additional systems is anticipated to bolster India’s air defence capabilities, particularly in the eastern sector that borders China. The S-400 systems proved crucial in India’s air defence strategy during Operation Sindoor in May 2025, and their performance has bolstered the argument for expanding India’s S-400 fleet. This expansion is seen as a strategic move to enhance national security, especially given regional tensions.
While India is moving forward with the S-400 deal, it has yet to make a decision regarding the purchase of Russia’s Su-57 fifth-generation fighter aircraft. The Indian Air Force has shown interest in this proposal, particularly in light of China’s deployment of J-20 stealth fighters in Tibet. The discussions surrounding the S-400 acquisition are expected to be part of broader defence talks between India and Russia.
These talks are set to coincide with Russian President Vladimir Putin’s scheduled visit to India for the BRICS summit in September. The summit may serve as a significant platform for both nations to discuss and negotiate their defence collaborations further. With these developments, the strategic partnership between India and Russia continues to evolve, reflecting the shifting dynamics of regional and global defence alignments.
