South Korean President Lee Jae Myung has strongly backed the government’s bold plan for regional investment, countering claims from critics that the initiative is aimed at enhancing his popularity. The strategy, recently unveiled, is centered around “three megaprojects” designed to revolutionize South Korea’s economy by channeling substantial funds into semiconductors, physical artificial intelligence (AI), and AI data centers. This ambitious program is set to draw a total investment of 4,755 trillion won, which equates to about $3.11 trillion.
As part of this comprehensive plan, Samsung is set to construct two memory chip fabrication plants in Gwangju, while SK hynix has committed to developing two semiconductor fabs in the Jeolla provinces, with these ventures expected to see a combined investment of 800 trillion won. These projects are envisioned not just as industrial milestones but as foundational pillars for the nation’s economic future.
President Lee has firmly stated that the initiative’s primary purpose is to safeguard South Korea’s long-term prospects, dismissing any notion that it is a maneuver to garner short-term political gains. He pointed out that if the intention were to sway public opinion, the announcement would have strategically coincided with the June local elections, which it did not.
Emphasizing the broader objectives of the projects, Lee underscored that they are designed to open new avenues, boost the country’s industrial edge, and generate employment for younger generations. He stressed that the focus is on enhancing the quality of life for the populace, which he believes should take precedence over any concerns about his approval ratings.
