In a recent Cabinet meeting, South Korean President Lee Jae Myung emphasized the importance of prioritizing national interests in the country’s foreign policy, acknowledging that disagreements with allies are an inevitable part of international relations. While reaffirming the significance of the South Korea–United States alliance, Lee urged officials to address any differences through open dialogue and diplomacy.

Lee’s comments come amid reports of tensions between Seoul and Washington concerning issues such as intelligence-sharing arrangements, visa delays, and communication with senior U.S. officials. These challenges have sparked a debate within South Korea, with opposition politicians expressing concerns over the current state of bilateral relations.

During his address, President Lee stressed that countries might not always have identical interests, but it is crucial to manage disagreements without letting them affect broader ties. He highlighted the need for South Korea to conduct its diplomacy with confidence as a sovereign nation, while also continuing to strengthen cooperation with the United States and other major powers.

South Korean Ambassador to the United States, Kang Kyung-wha, acknowledged the difficulties in securing high-level communication with the White House. However, she noted that discussions between relevant agencies had made progress on resolving intelligence-related concerns.

President Lee maintained that despite the challenges, the alliance with the United States remains a central pillar of South Korea’s diplomatic efforts. He emphasized the importance of managing differences through sustained engagement, aiming to ensure that national interests are safeguarded while maintaining strong international partnerships.
