South Korean stocks experienced a significant rebound on Wednesday, driven by easing concerns surrounding artificial intelligence (AI) spending. The Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) jumped 3.29%, closing at 5,735.66, an increase of 182.92 points from the previous session’s losses. This rally was spurred by improved investor sentiment after positive earnings reports from U.S.-based AI server manufacturer Super Micro Computer, which alleviated worries about the financial burden of AI infrastructure investments.
The resurgence in the stock market was led by semiconductor shares, with major technology companies like Samsung Electronics and SK hynix seeing substantial gains. Samsung Electronics’ stock rose by 5.67% to 223,500 won, while SK hynix’s shares increased by 5.81% to 1.29 million won. Additionally, SK Corp., the holding company for SK Group, saw its stock advance by 12.62% to 482,000 won, bouncing back from a steep decline in the previous trading session.
LS Electric also contributed to the market’s positive momentum, climbing 7.02% to 166,100 won, following the release of stronger-than-expected third-quarter earnings. The company’s growth was supported by heightened demand for power equipment used in AI data centers. In contrast, defense company LIG D&A faced a challenging day, with its stock plummeting 9.03% to 498,500 won after being barred from bidding on defense contracts for two years due to bribery allegations.
Foreign investors played a crucial role in supporting the market’s recovery, purchasing a net 659.96 billion won worth of South Korean shares. The Korean won also demonstrated strength, trading at 1,325.2 against the US dollar, an improvement of 0.8 won from the previous day’s close.
The rebound in South Korean stocks highlights renewed confidence in technology sectors as robust corporate earnings help alleviate concerns about the financial implications of AI infrastructure development and broader market pressures. This positive turn reflects the market’s resilience and adaptability in the face of evolving global economic dynamics.
