South Korea is setting the stage for a significant leap in its economic strategy with plans to allocate an unprecedented budget surpassing 800 trillion won by 2027. This ambitious financial plan is underpinned by expected tax revenues exceeding 500 trillion won, as the nation intensifies its focus on bolstering the artificial intelligence and semiconductor sectors. The move comes as President Lee Jae Myung emphasizes the government’s commitment to backing three pivotal national projects centered on semiconductors, AI data centers, and physical AI.
A cornerstone of this strategy is the creation of a Future Response Fund. This fund will channel surplus tax revenues generated from the burgeoning AI-driven semiconductor industry into essential long-term investments. The targeted areas for these investments include youth programs, educational advancements, regional development, and fostering innovation. By doing so, the administration aims to ensure a comprehensive growth framework that spans various sectors and demographics.
In conjunction with these technological investments, the South Korean government is looking to enhance the nation’s infrastructure. This includes upgrades to electricity, water supply, transportation, and logistics systems. Moreover, efforts will be made to improve housing, healthcare, education, and cultural facilities, all aimed at promoting balanced regional growth. Such improvements are expected to support not just economic expansion but also the overall quality of life in different regions across the country.
The government is also set to undertake a significant restructuring of its fiscal priorities, reallocating around 50 trillion won in government spending to free up resources for these key strategic investments. Along with economic initiatives, the 2027 budget will place a strong emphasis on expanding support for young people and enhancing protections for nontraditional workers. Additionally, the “AI for All” program will be promoted to ensure AI technologies are more accessible to the wider population, fostering an inclusive technological environment.
