Uber Technologies is set to enhance its global reach by acquiring Delivery Hero, a food delivery company based in Germany, in a transaction valued at $14.8 billion. This strategic move will bolster Uber’s presence in 50 international markets, further solidifying its role in the food-delivery industry.
The terms of the agreement specify that Uber will pay €41.50, equivalent to $47.60, per share for Delivery Hero’s primary global operations. Additionally, the deal involves acquiring shares from major investor Prosus. This acquisition marks a significant step in Uber’s efforts to expand its footprint in the competitive food delivery sector.
Alongside Uber’s acquisition, investment firm SSW Partners will take over operations in 14 different markets for a sum of approximately $1.6 billion. These operations include businesses located in Austria, Norway, Spain, and Sweden, which SSW plans to sell individually to maximize their value.
The move by Uber comes amid a wave of consolidation within the global food-delivery market, a trend that gained momentum during the rapid expansion experienced throughout the Covid-19 pandemic. In response to increasing competition, major companies have been actively pursuing mergers and acquisitions to enhance their international standing and streamline operations.

Delivery Hero, for its part, initiated a strategic review to address investor demands for restructuring and further asset sales, ultimately leading to this acquisition.
