Korean Basketball Triumphs at Asian Games Amid Ongoing Domestic Challenges

by admin477351

Korean basketball has achieved a significant milestone at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games, securing medals in all four categories across both men’s and women’s 5×5 and 3×3 competitions. This success comes as a welcome boost for the sport, which has been grappling with challenges in its domestic popularity and talent development.

The men’s 5×5 basketball team ended a 12-year title drought by defeating Japan 67-57 in the final, while the men’s 3×3 team clinched Korea’s first Asian Games title in the discipline with a decisive 19-10 victory over Qatar. On the women’s side, the 3×3 team earned a bronze medal by outplaying Thailand 21-8, marking Korea’s inaugural medal in that category. The women’s 5×5 team also made it to the final after overcoming China in a close 85-80 semifinal match.

Despite these achievements, Korean basketball continues to face challenges domestically. The Korean Basketball League saw a rise in attendance during the 2025-26 regular season, reaching 811,185 spectators, the highest in nine seasons. However, this figure still falls short of the league’s record 1.2 million attendance set in the 2013-14 season. The domestic talent pool remains limited, with 2,351 registered student-athletes, a stark contrast to Japan’s more extensive basketball system.

The recent successes can be attributed to increased international exposure and structured preparation, particularly for the 3×3 teams, which have been actively participating in domestic and international competitions leading up to the Asian Games. Nonetheless, basketball analysts and officials emphasize the need for ongoing investment in player development, international competition, domestic leagues, and training infrastructure to sustain this progress.

In particular, the women’s teams face hurdles in maintaining sufficient numbers for full 5×5 training sessions, highlighting the need for a broader player base. As Korean basketball celebrates its Asian Games achievements, the focus now shifts to addressing these domestic challenges to ensure continued growth and success on the international stage.
