Google is set to enhance its Google Maps service in South Korea by introducing full navigation features, including turn-by-turn directions. This development comes after South Korea conditionally approved the export of high-precision map data, paving the way for these capabilities. As part of this initiative, Google is actively seeking a senior Strategic Partnerships Development Manager in Seoul. This role is aimed at collaborating with Korean businesses, public institutions, and technology partners, signifying the company’s intent to bolster its local team dedicated to expanding Maps services in the region.
Currently, Google Maps in South Korea offers basic services such as place listings, reviews, and public transit information. However, it lacks the comprehensive navigation functions that are standard in other regions. The planned rollout of these features will position Google Maps in direct competition with established local services like Naver Map and Kakao Map, which already provide these capabilities.
South Korea’s decision to approve the export of high-precision map data in February marks a significant shift, as previous requests had been denied due to national security concerns. This green light is subject to certain conditions, but it represents a crucial step forward for Google’s expansion plans in the country.
While Google has not yet revealed a specific launch date or detailed all the new features that will accompany the navigation expansion, the company is anticipated to collaborate with local data providers.
