In a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict, Russia has launched a widespread missile and drone attack on Kyiv and the surrounding regions, deploying its hypersonic Oreshnik ballistic missile for what marks the third instance during the Ukraine conflict. Ukrainian officials report that the assault has resulted in at least four fatalities and around 100 injuries. The strikes, targeting the capital city and Bila Tserkva, inflicted damage on residential areas, educational institutions, and several public facilities, including a water plant and government offices. The attacks triggered fires in numerous districts, compounding the destruction.
The overnight assault saw Russia unleashing nearly 600 drones in addition to 90 missiles, with a significant number of them being ballistic. Although Ukrainian defense systems managed to intercept many, several missiles struck the heart of Kyiv, causing extensive damage. Russia has confirmed the deployment of the Oreshnik missile along with other sophisticated missile systems, claiming the targets were Ukrainian military sites. Moscow justified the assault as a retaliatory measure against alleged Ukrainian offenses within Russian-held territories.
Kyiv’s Mayor, Vitali Klitschko, highlighted that every district of the capital bore the brunt of the attack. Emergency services were engaged in rescuing civilians from shelters and dealing with the aftermath of the explosions, which included extinguishing multiple fires. Among the damaged structures were Ukraine’s National Art Museum and sections of the foreign ministry building, with Ukrainian authorities describing the strikes as targeted attacks on civilian infrastructure and cultural assets.
European leaders have denounced the Russian offensive in strong terms. French President Emmanuel Macron criticized the utilization of the Oreshnik missile, labeling it a perilous escalation. Similarly, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz condemned the strikes as reckless. The European Union has accused Russia of engaging in terror tactics aimed at the civilian population. The Oreshnik missile, introduced by Russia in late 2024, is reputedly capable of carrying both nuclear and conventional warheads and is described by Russian President Vladimir Putin as nearly impossible to intercept, though Western analysts have expressed skepticism regarding these claims.
This recent assault by Russia follows closely on the heels of warnings from President Putin about potential retaliation in response to alleged Ukrainian drone incursions into Russian-controlled areas.
