Zelenskyy Criticizes US Sanctions Pause, Warns of Prolonged Ukraine Conflict

by admin477351

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has expressed strong disapproval of the United States’ decision to pause new sanctions against Russia, warning that this move could potentially embolden Russian President Vladimir Putin to escalate the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Zelenskyy characterized this suspension of sanctions as a concession to Moscow, arguing that reducing economic pressure might undermine efforts to bring the war to an end.

The Trump administration has opted to delay the implementation of proposed sanctions for 60 days in order to evaluate their potential impact on both the global economy and American economic interests. These measures would have introduced additional restrictions on Russia’s energy sector, financial institutions, and oil transportation network, including imposing tariffs of up to 100% on key importers of Russian oil, such as China and India. While Russian officials have welcomed the pause, concerns have arisen in Kyiv regarding the U.S. commitment to maintaining pressure on Moscow.

Zelenskyy’s criticism coincides with a period of intensified Russian attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, as the country braces for winter. Recent strikes are reported to have damaged over 15 significant electricity generation and transmission facilities, raising alarms about potential power shortages and the ability of Ukrainian cities to sustain essential services. The Ukrainian president noted that these attacks are straining the country’s air defense systems, which are increasingly challenged in intercepting missiles and drones. He called for continued international assistance to safeguard critical infrastructure and civilian populations.

Additionally, Zelenskyy voiced concerns about restrictions impacting Starlink satellite internet services used by Ukrainian forces, noting that these limitations are disrupting certain military operations, including those involving drones. This issue reflects broader tensions between Washington and Kyiv concerning sanctions, military support, and strategies for ending the war in Ukraine.

President Zelenskyy maintains that sustained pressure on Russia is crucial to achieving a lasting peace. He warned that easing restrictions while Russian attacks persist could extend the duration of the conflict, urging the United States and European countries to reconsider their approaches to diplomatic engagement with Russia.
