Negotiations with Iran are reportedly showing promise, according to US President Donald Trump, who expressed optimism about reaching a temporary agreement on navigation through the Strait of Hormuz within the next 48 hours. The discussions involve the United States, Iran, and Oman, aiming to reinstate commercial shipping in this crucial corridor and alleviate disruptions in global trade.
The plan under consideration proposes a 60-day arrangement to enhance the flow of shipping traffic through the strait. The arrangement includes designating separate routes for vessels: with inbound ships to use a northern channel closer to Iran, while outbound vessels would traverse waters near Oman, coordinated with Iranian authorities. This temporary agreement is expected to waive transit fees, and Iran and Oman are projected to collaborate on clearing mines from critical shipping lanes.
Despite the optimism surrounding these discussions, Iranian officials have urged a cautious approach. They have warned that, even with an agreement involving Oman, the immediate reopening of the Strait of Hormuz should not be assumed. Tehran has emphasized that any progress will depend significantly on potential shifts in US policy.
President Trump, addressing reporters, suggested that an official announcement might be imminent, possibly “tomorrow or the next day.” He described the ongoing talks with Iran as “moving along very nicely,” but also highlighted the gravity of the situation by warning of serious consequences if a deal is not reached.
If successfully concluded, this agreement could play a critical role in reducing tensions in the Gulf region and improving the passage of global energy and commercial shipments through one of the world’s most important maritime chokepoints.
